A Song to Finish the Colour Poem Project

The colour poem project has come to an end.
For our final contribution we would like to sing a song about the colour names in Måori.

Mā is white,
whero is red,
kākāriki green
Pango is black,
Mangu is too,
A. E. I. O. U.

Kōwhai yellow,
parauri brown,
kikorangi blue
Mawhero pink
Karaka orange,
A. E. I. O. U.

Some of us are wearing pink for Pink Shirt Day - a day where people stand up against bullying.

Do you know some colour words in another language?

Don't be Afraid to Fail - Just Give It a Go!

Mrs McK and the students have had a first try at making a green-screen movie, using the Doink app for the ipad.

We filmed the dances that we've been developing using ideas from the story 'Hemi Dances'.

Each group had to make a dance to tell a story about our environment.
Each group had to include:
high, medium or low levels
and
connections.
Each group member made up a move and taught it to the other group members.
The dances worked out very well.

Our first attempt at using green-screen hasn't worked out quite as well as we hoped, but that's okay!
We will learn from our mistakes, and next time we expect we will be more successful.

If you are new to using the Doink green-screen app,

What will we do differently next time?

  • a much bigger background green-screen to dance in front of.
  • green-screen colour on the floor
What new skill are you learning to master?

Blue

The colour poem project continues.
As we worked on our 'blue' poems we were learning that good writers 'show' not 'tell' - letting the words create pictures for the reader.

We started our poems by writing what blue tastes, feels, sounds and looks like.
We thought carefully about our words.
We were pleased with what we wrote.

We were surprised when Mrs McK suggested that now we should take out any word that said 'blue' and any phrase that said 'looks like' 'tastes like' etc.
We gave it a try, and we think our poems sound even better now! What do you think?

What do you think - did we manage to create word pictures for you?

Our Colour Poems

A few weeks ago we were invited to take part
Each week a new colour from the visible spectrum is showcased:
R O Y G B I V

The poems are shared with other classes via Twitter, using the hashtag #clrpoem

We missed the Red week, but here are some of our poems for Orange, Yellow and Green weeks.

The next colour is Blue.
Do you have a poem to share with us?

Our 'Fat' Experiment

We put some potato chips (crisps) in a beaker and poured very hot water on top.
We let the water cool, then put the beaker in the fridge overnight.
When we looked at it the next morning, what did we see?

We saw a layer of fat!
Where did it come from?
We decided the fat had come out of the chippies!

Last term when we visited Harold at the Life Education van we learned that food with ingredients (sugar, fat and salt
is treat food that should not be eaten every day.

Now we know why chippies are a once in awhile snack, not an everyday snack.

What are some yummy, healthy snacks that we could bring in our lunchboxes?
